Women's Lacrosse Closes First Half on 9-2 Run to Defeat University of Dallas

IRVING, Texas -- The Southwestern University Pirates women's lacrosse team put on a strong defensive performance to defeat the University of Dallas 21-10 in a conference matchup.

Southwestern scored the first seven goals of the game, opening with an unassisted goal by Grace Maynard in the first three minutes. Raven Garcia then found Jillie Klumbach a little more than a minute later for a goal. Johnee Wolter had a pair of unassisted goals bookending another Maynard goal from Hayley Donnelly and Garcia ended the 7-0 run with an unassisted score.

Dallas answered back with a 4-0 run spearheaded by three Camryn Dougherty points, scoring two unassisted goals and finding Emily Pauletti for another. Erika Keever's unassisted goal with 11:51 remaining in the first half cut the Pirates' lead to 7-4.

Southwestern closed the half on a 9-2 run, scoring three unassisted goals to take a 16-6 lead into halftime.

The Pirates opened the second half with three goals in the first five minutes, opening with an unassisted Donnelly goal, who then found Maynard for another. Garcia scored an unassisted goal and Dallas and Southwestern exchanged shots, with Pauletti and Lexi Leite scoring on Dougherty for Dallas and Klumbach finding Wolter and Garcia finding Natasha Perez-Krause for Southwestern.

Dallas ended the game with two unassisted goals, the final playing a woman up.

Donnelly led the Pirates with seven points, scoring three goals on six shots and assisting on four others. Maynard, Garcia, and Wolter each scored four goals with Garcia and Wolter getting theirs on just five shots each.

Maynard also put together a strong performance defensively, winning 10 draw controls, grabbing four ground balls, and causing two turnovers. Perez-Krause had three ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Goalie Mckenna Zinke played 44:52 in front of the net, saving two of nine shots to pick up her third win. Southwestern outshot Dallas 33-16, doing most of its damage in the first half, where it held a 25-9 edge in shots. Dougherty led Dallas with five points, scoring two goals on three shots with three assists.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 3-2 this season and 1-0 in conference play. Southwestern will host N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday, March 5 at 5:00 p.m.
