GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern women's lacrosse head coach Matthew Grosso has resigned his position after starting the program and heading it up for five seasons.

"I am so appreciative of all that Coach Grosso has done to start the women's lacrosse program and also for his contributions to the Athletic Department," said Director of Athletics Dr. Glada Munt. "I am excited to see where this program can go now that a solid foundation has been built."

Grosso quickly built the program from the ground up in 2014 and posted a 7-9 record in their first season, a feat they replicated in 2015. The following two seasons Grosso guided his team to back-to-back 8-8 seasons. Grosso has twice been named the Independent Women's Lacrosse Schools (IWLS) Co-Coach of the Year, earning the honor in 2017 and 2018. 

Grosso's reach extended beyond the field as he and his team participated in multiple community service projects including holding clinics for elementary schools, making birthday boxes for homeless children and starting the suicide prevention walk on campus benefiting AFSP.

"Thank you to Dr. Munt and Southwestern University for the opportunity to begin the women's lacrosse program here on campus," said Coach Grosso. "After 25 years of coaching lacrosse I am looking forward to starting a new opportunity outside of coaching for myself and my family. I am very proud of the progress the team has made over its first five seasons and I hope to see the Pirates continue to do well in the future."

A national search for Southwestern's next head coach for the women's lacrosse program will begin immediately.
