Women's Lax Falls Short to Sewanee

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead, but the Sewanee Tigers proved to be a little too much on Sunday afternoon as tehy outscored Southwestern 10-4 in the second half for an 18-10 win at Varsity Field.

Sewanee outshot Southwestern 35-22 and won 19 of 30 draw controls. The Pirates foced the Tigers into 30 turnovers, but turned it over 26 times on the other end. Sewanee picked up 32 ground balls ot Southwestern's 26.

The Pirates jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first seven minutes thanks to goals from junior Madison Godleski, senior Allison Cook, and junior Hayley Donnelly, but Sewanee scored the next five goals to take a 6-3 advantage. 

Cook, Godleski, and senior Brenna Jobb all added goals in the first half as the Tigers took a slim 8-6 lead at the break.

From there, Southwestern tried to keep pace, keeping it at an 11-8 game, but the Tigers used small scoring runs to build their lead as they eventually pulled away for the 18-10 win.

Cook had another great contest, going for three goals and an assist to go with four caused turnovers, four draw controls, and four ground balls. Sophomore Grace Maynard added two goals and two assists to go with two caused turnovers and five ground balls while Donnelly finished with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Claire Harding had four saves in goal while sophomore Haley Hurt added five saves.

Southwestern goes to 3-7 overall and will return to action on Friday as they head to Greencastle, Ind. to take on DePauw at 4 PM.
