Pirates Suffer Another Nail Biting Loss, Falling Short to Concordia (WI)

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team suffered another heartbreaking defeat as they fell to Concordia Wisconsin on Tuesday evening by the score of 11-10 at Varsity Field.

In their last four losses, the Pirates have lost by a combined five goals including three one goal losses. 

Concordia held a narrow 25-23 advantage in shots as well as a 35-26 advantage in ground balls. Both teams struggled with turnovers, with the Falcons committing 43 to the Pirates 39, as well as clear attempts, with the Falcons going 18 of 31 and the Pirates going 17 of 30.

It was all Falcons in the early going as they scored the first three goals in the first 10 minutes to take a 3-0 lead. Southwestern would go on to dominate the next 10 minutes, scoring five goals as junior Hayley Donnelly scored a pair of goals during the stretch while senior Brenna Jobb, junior Ronni Winter, and sophomore Grace Maynard each added a goal. 

The Falcons got one back to make it a 5-4 game, but Donnelly earned her hat trick in the first half, scoring the final goal of the half to push the Pirates ahead 6-4 at the break as Southwestern dominated the final 20 minutes of the first half.

It was Concordia who came out red hot in the second half though as they scored the first three goals of the half again to surge ahead and take a 7-6 lead. Goals by Donnelly and Winter pushed them back ahead 8-7, but the Falcons responded with two of their own to lead 9-8 with 9:10 to play.

Freshman Jillie Klumbach scored with 7:48 to make it a 9-9 game, but Concordia scored the next two goals to lead 11-9. Donnelly added one more goal with 12 seconds to play, but it would not be enough as the Pirates fell just short.

Donnelly scored five in the contest to go with two ground balls while Winter added two. Maynard and Jobb each had a goal and an assist while senior Allison Cook continued her elevated play, going for four caused turnovers, four ground balls, and two assists. Sophomore Johnee Wolter also had an assist in the contest.

Senior Lacey Bowersox had five caused turnovers and four ground balls while junior Julia Tape also had five caused turnovers and six ground balls. Winter won seven draw controls while sophomore Claire Harding earned five saves in 39:08 of play. Sophomore Haley Hurt played the final 20:52 and had one save.

Lauren Paquin led the Falcons with three goals and five caused turnovers while Ciara Bond had three goals and five ground balls. Kennedy Boyer finished with seven saves.

Southwestern falls to 2-6 overall and return to action on Thursday as they continue their Spring Break homestand with a 6 PM match-up against Puget Sound.
