GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team had another 11 goal performance in the first half, but were outscored 9-2 in the second half as they fell to Aurora, 14-13, on Tuesday night at Varsity Field.
The Pirates outshot the Spartans 27-24 in the contest and forced 29 turnovers. Southwestern had 22 ground balls and won 14 of 29 draw controls. The Pirates were only 6 of 13 in free position shots on the day and only had three saves in the contest.
Sophomore Johnee Wolter got the scoring started with a pair of goals in the first four minutes for a 2-0 lead. Wolter had her third goal 10 minutes later along with a goal from junior Ronni Winter to open up a 4-2 lead.
After an Aurora goal, Southwestern scored three consecutive goals behind senior Allison Cook, Winter, and sophomore Hayley Donnelly to open the lead out to 7-3.
The Spartans added another goal, but Southwestern closed the half by scoring four of the final five goals to open an 11-5 lead at the break. Senior Brenna Jobb and Donnelly each scored while sophomore Grace Maynard scored a pair.
In the second half, Aurora mounted a furious comeback as they scored four straight goals at two separate points in the second half, with one instance coming in the final five minutes, to storm back and take the road win, 14-13. Andrea Colford scored the final two goals including the game-winner with 14 seconds remaining.
Maynard had a pair of goals in the half, but it was not enough to stop the Spartans. She finished with four total and an assist to go with three ground balls, two ground controls, and two caused turnovers. Cook had a goal and an assist to go with seven caused turnovers, nine ground balls, and eight draw controls.
Winter had two goals, two assists, two ground balls, and two draw controls while Wolter had three goals and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Claire Harding played the first half, finishing with one save, while sophomore Haley Hurt played the second half and had two saves.
Colford had five goals, four caused turnovers, and 10 draw controls for Aurora while Taylor Arcivar had three goals and three assists. Kristina Krokosz also had four goals while Reilly Armstrong had 10 saves in the cage.
Southwestern moves to 2-5 overall and will look to rebound next Tuesday as they welcome in Concordia (WI) at 6 PM.
