Pirates Rally Falls Short in Road Loss to Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. - The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team mounted a furious comeback against the Hendrix Warriors on Friday evening, but the come-from-behind effort fell just short as the Warriors earned a 21-19 home win.

The two teams were even in shots at 40 with the Pirates holding a 35-24 advantage in ground balls. The two teams were also even in turnovers; however, the Warriors domianted draw controls, taking 27 of 42 in the contest which turned into opportunities.

After an early barrage of goals saw the two teams even at two after five minutes, Hendrix scored four consecutive goals to open up a 6-2 lead at the 10 minute mark. Southwestern would get it down to two before Hendrix pushed it back to four.

Again, the Pirates got it down to two with 10 minutes to go in the half before three straight goals from Hendrix opened up a five goal lead. The Warriors would ultimately take a 14-9 into the break.

In the second half, Hendrix pushed their lead out to 19-11 in the first eight minutes of the second half. However, the Pirates flipped a switch and outscored the Warriors 8-2 the rest of the way. Unfortunately for Southwestern, there was not enough time on the clock to complete the comeback as they fell by two.

Sophomore Johnee Wolter had a huge game, setting a career-high in goals with four and matching a career-high in points with six, notching two assists. Senior Brenna Jobb also scored four to go with an assists while junior Ronni Winter had four goals. 

Sophomore Grace Maynard had two goals and three assists to go with four ground balls while senior Allison Cook had a monster all-around game with two goals, nine ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Junior Hayley Donnelly, junior Madison Godleski, and freshman Jillie Klumbach all had goals in the contest while Donnelly had a pair of assists. 

Maynard had four ground balls while freshman Lauren Helsley had three. In goal, sophomore Haley Hurt had seven saves in goal.

Reilly Frazier led Hendrix with five goals and an assists while Shelby Hill had four goals and three assists. Morgan Dasch had six assists while Alexis Truitt had nine saves in goal.

Southwestern moves to 1-3 overall and will look to bounce back tomorrow as they take on Berry in a neutral site game in Conway beginning at 1 PM.
