Pirates Fall Short to Augustana in First Road Contest

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team had their first road test on Friday afternoon as they battled Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field, falling short to the Vikings by the score of 16-11.

Southwestern out shot Augustana 35-29 and even forced 25 Viking turnovers while only giving it away 15 times. The Pirates also held a 32-31 advantage in ground balls. Augustana took advantage of free position shots, going 8-for-11 on the day while Southwestern was 0 of 6.

Sophomore Grace Maynard and senior Allison Cook got the scoring started to jump out to a 2-1 lead in the first five minutes; however, the Vikings would outscore the Pirates 8-2 the rest of the way including four consecutive goals to take an 8-4 lead into the break.

Goals from junior Hayley Donnelly and sophomore Johnee Wolter cut the deficit to 8-6 before the two teams exchanged goals with Augustana maintaining an 11-8. Wolter and junior Ronni Winter scored back-to-back goals to cut it to 11-10.

After a Augustana goal and a Cook goal cut the game at one, the Vikings closed the contest with four straight goals to pull away and hold off the Pirates for the 16-11 win, their first of the season.

Winter finished with four goals in the contest while Wolter had three goals. Cook scored a pair of goals and was terrific defensively, picking up 10 ground balls and adding three caused turnovers. Maynard finished with a goal, an assists, six ground balls, and three caused turnovers while senior Brenna Jobb had six ground balls.

Sophomore Haley Hurt finished with five saves in the loss.

Bailey Aasen led Augustana with six goals and an assist while Christina McCabe added four goals and an assist. Annalia Fowler had 12 saves.

Southwestern moves to 1-2 overall, but will look to rebound tomorrow as they take on Loras in a neutral site game at Thorson-Lucken Field beginning at 2 PM.
