Pirates Bounce Back with Dominant Win Over Dallas

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team bounced back from a tough start in their season opener to earn their first win of the season, dominating the University of Dallas to an 18-6 victory on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.

The Pirates outshot Dallas 28-13 including 17 in the first half alone. Southwestern forced 33 Dallas turnovers and won 15 draw controls on the day. The Pirates also had 28 ground balls and were 10 of 16 in clear attempts.

It was all Pirates in the first 20 minutes as they scored 11 consecutive goals behind three from sophomore Johnee Wolter, three from junior Hayley Donnelly, and two from sophomore Grace Maynard, and two from junior Ronni Winter. Freshman Jillie Klumbach also added a goal during the run. 

Dallas got a pair of goals back in the final 10 minutes before Maynard scored her third goal with 1:20 to play in the half as the Pirates took a 12-2 lead into the break.

Southwestern was able to empty their bench throughout the second half as they ran their lead up to 17-3 in the first 15 minutes of the second half. From there, the PIrates did not look back as they cruised to the dominant home win.

Donnelly finished with five goals and an assist to go with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Maynard scored four to go with an assists, four caused turnovers, and seven ground balls. Wolter finished with three goals, and assists, and three caused turnovers while senior Allison Cook had four caused turnovers and three ground balls. 

Senior Brenna Jobb, freshman Lauren Helsley, and freshman Sabrina Suriol all scored a goal in the second half while Klumback finished with two assists. Senior Lacey Bowersox had five ground balls.

In goal, sophomore Haley Hurt had five saves in the half, earning the win, while fellow sophomore Claire Harding also had five saves coming in the second half.

Erika Keever led Dallas with three goals while Lexi Leite had two assists. Lizz Winkler finished with seven saves in goal.

Southwestern moves to 1-1 overall and will prepare for their first road trip of the season as they will head up to Rock Island, Ill. to battle Augustana on Friday at 1 PM.
