Women's lacrosse holds off Whitman to open season

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern never trailed in an 11-10 win over Whitman College to open the season at home Friday afternoon.

The Pirates started strong with five unanswered goals in the first 14 minutes of the contest. Whitman bounced back and pulled within three, 7-4, at halftime.

The Blues scored the first goal of the second half but SU then went on a 4-1 run, extending their lead to five once again, 11-6.

Southwestern's defense held Whitman scoreless for the next seven minutes as the Pirates seemed to have the game in hand, but Whitman had other plans as they scored four goals in the final two minutes and had the game-tying goal waived off with just one second remaining.

First-year Johnee Wolter and senior Emma Albin led offensively with three goals and one assist a piece. First-year Hayley Donnelly posted two goals in her first outing. Allison Cook and Anne Brown posted four caused turnovers each in the win.

Southwestern (1-0) remains at home to face Occidental College on Sunday at 11 am.
