Women’s lacrosse snags come from behind victory in Illinois

Southwestern closed the game on a 5-0 run to defeat Aurora University 15-11 in Aurora, Ill. on Friday afternoon.

The first half was a back and forth contest with teams trading goals most of the way. Neither team had a run until SU closed the half with three straight goals in the final nine minutes to lead 6-5 at the break.

Kaitlyn Campbell and Kate Davis kept the run alive with back to back goals to start the second half and give the Pirates their biggest lead of the game, 8-5, with 26 minutes to play. Aurora roared back with three goals to tie the game at eight.

Catie Willis and Courtney Ragland put the Pirates back on top but AU regained the lead with three straight goals from Kenny Hughes with eight minutes to play.

At that point Southwestern took over as Campbell scored again to start the run and capped off the run with a goal with 12 seconds remaining.

Southwestern led 25-22 in shots and 30-23 in ground balls but committed three more turnovers. Ragland led the offense with four goals and one assist while Campbell also notched four goals. Hughes led all scorers with seven goals and one assist for Aurora.

The Pirates improve to 6-5 on the year while Aurora falls to 2-4. SU remains in Illinois to face North Central College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
