Pirates split home weekend play

Southwestern rounded out their lengthy home stand with games against Puget Sound and Olivet. SU fell 10-9 to Puget Sound on Friday afternoon before rallying for a huge 16-1 win over Olivet on Sunday.

Friday's game was a close contest the entire way as the teams traded goals most of the way. SU took a slight one goal lead, 6-5, into the break after Courtney Ragland, assisted by Catie Willis, scored with just over four minutes remaining.

Olivia Keene had a huge second half for Puget Sound, scoring the first two goals of the frame and four overall to give the Loggers a two goal lead 10-8 with 12 minutes to play.

Kate Davis scored with 47 seconds remaining to cut PSU's lead to one 10-9, but the Loggers hung on for the win.

Southwestern led 24-22 in shots and committed 11 fewer turnovers in the loss. Ragland led SU with four goals while Keene led Puget Sound with six goals.

On Sunday, Southwestern wasted no time and exploded for 13 first half goals while holding Olivet scoreless to lead 13-0 at the break.

SU added three straight to open the second half and lead 16-0. Olivet scored their only goal with 8:27 to play in the game as Southwestern cruised to the win.

The Pirates allowed just five shots in the entire game while taking 39 and picked up 40 of 62 ground balls. Kaitlyn Campbell and Allison Schmitt led the offense. Campbell had four goals while Schmitt posted three goals and one assist. Makaela Starks led Southwestern with six ground balls.

Southwestern moves to 5-5 on the year. They return to the road to face Aurora University on Friday in Aurora, Illinois. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
