Pirates battle elements, Blue Streaks at home

The wind died down just as the Pirates were heating up on a chilly night in Georgetown as Southwestern women's lacrosse battled John Carroll University Thursday night.

Kate Davis jumpstarted the Pirate offense with a goal less than a minute into the game, scoring on a free position attempt. JCU got a free position attempt of their own and converted to tie the game 1-1, but SU rattled off four straight to go up 5-1.

The Blue Streaks stopped the bleeding briefly, but Southwestern closed the half on a 5-3 run to lead 10-4 at the break.

John Carroll came out much more focused in the start of the second half and scored the first goal of the freme to pull within five, 10-5. SU heated back up and put together four runs of two goals or more to seal the win 20-9.

Davis led the Pirates with five goals and one assist on five shots and two caused turnovers. Courtney Ragland added in four goals and one assist and Emma Albin and Allison Schmitt added three goals each. Allison Cook was all over the field and corralled an impressive nine ground balls and caused a team high three turnovers.

Southwestern led 32-17 in shots and forced JCU into one more turnover, 27-26. The two teams were even in ground balls and draw controls but the Blue Streaks committed 29 more fouls in the loss.

The Pirates improve to 4-3 on the year and remain at home to face Gordon College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
