Schmitt scores game winner in thrilling home contest

Southwestern started the second half on a 6-1 run to take a lead and Allison Schmitt scored the game winning goal with less than one minute to play as the Pirates defeated King's College at home on Tuesday night 11-10.

It took just 40 seconds for King's to get on the board in their first game of the season and took a 5-3 lead into the break after closing the half with two straight goals.

After halftime, Head Coach Matthew Grosso got the team refocused and they took off, exploding for a 6-1 run to lead 9-6 with 20 minutes remaining. King's College began to win the draw control and punched back with two goals in the next five minutes to regain the lead 9-8. Kaitlyn Campbell evened the count once again with an unassisted goal with nine minutes to play, but King's scored twice and tied the game 10-10 for the final five minutes.

It was a fast paced final five minutes as both teams were searching for the win. Schmitt made it a reality for the Pirates, diving through the defense from the right wing and finding just enough of a gap to get the shot off for the game winner with 55 ticks left on the clock.

SU's defense held firm in the final minute and kept KC from getting any decent look at goal to seal the win.

Courtney Davis led the Pirates offensively with two goals and two assists while Kate Davis added three goals on three shots. Allison Cook posted a team high six groundballs and Caitlin Stanyard returned to goal with four saves and the win. Anastasia Aravia led King's with three goals and two assists.

Southwestern improves to 3-3 on the year and remains at home to face John Carroll on Thursday night at 6 pm.
