Women’s lacrosse suffers first loss

Southwestern fell 18-11 to Rhodes College on Sunday in Memphis to fall to 1-1 on the year.

The Pirates opened the scoring with a goal from Kate Davis at 27:13, but Rhodes answered with four goals to lead 4-1 ten minutes in.

Davis scored again and Courtney Ragland added another to cut into the Lynx lead, 4-3, but the teams traded goals to close the half. At the break, Southwestern trailed 8-6.

Rhodes opened the second half with a goal to extend their lead then Ragland and Kaitlyn Campbell punched home back-to-back goals to bring SU within one goal, 9-8.

The Lynx took over, however, and closed the game on an 8-3 run to take the win 18-11. Ragland led offensively with three goals and one assist while Catie Willis added in three goals as well. Kendall Cunningham led Rhodes with six goals and one assist.

Southwestern trailed 37-22 in shots and 27-23 in ground balls. Campbell and Allison Cook gathered five ground balls each while Mary Jalufka forced two turnovers. Caitlin Stanyard suffered her first loss with seven saves.

The Pirates fall to 1-1 on the year and remain on the road for their next contest, an exhibition game against the University of Texas at home on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
