Women’s lacrosse opens season with easy win over Hendrix

Hendrix struck first but Southwestern's runs were too much to handle as the Pirates easily won their season opener 18-7 in Conway, Ark. on Friday night.

Southwestern fell behind early in the first half as Hendrix scored just three minutes into the game. Less than three minutes later, SU got on the board as Kate Davis scored unassisted. Her goal kicked off a 7-0 run that put the Pirates up 7-1 with 15:30 to go in the half.

Hendrix stopped the bleeding with a goal from Reger, but the Pirates closed the half on a 5-2 run to lead 12-3 at the break.

The Warriors posed the first goal of the second frame, but Southwestern proved too strong as the Pirates were never threatened en route to an 18-7 win.

Courtney Ragland and Kate Davis both posted five goals with incredible efficiency on the evening. Ragland scored five on six shots and Davis five on five shots. Allison Schmitt added two goals and a team high three assists and Allison Cook picked up 11 ground balls while Makaela Starks forced three turnovers in the win. Bridget Umble led Hendrix with three goals.

Southwestern opens the season at 1-0 on the year and head to Memphis to face Rhodes College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
