TACOMA, Wash. – Southwestern outscored Puget Sound 6-5 in the second half but could not overcome a huge first half deficit as they fell 17-7 on Friday night.
Puget Sound scored thirty seconds into the game to kick off a 12-1 run that would last the entire first half. Southwestern's only goal of the frame came three minutes into the contest as Kaitlyn Campbell scored unassisted.
Puget Sound picked up right where they left off at the beginning of the second half, scoring the first four goals of the frame to put the Pirates down 16-1, but SU's resiliency shone as they scored five straight in response including two from Christina Rosendahl. PSU scored one goal with 27 seconds to play and Campbell added her second of the game just before the final buzzer sounded to arrive at the 17-7 final.
Southwestern trailed 28-16 in shots, 15-11 in draw controls and 30-28 in ground balls but committed just one more turnover 25-24. The Pirates' biggest struggle came in clears as they converted on just 8 of 20 attempts.
The Pirates fall to 6-9 on the year with the loss and close out their inaugural season on Sunday, facing Loras College in a neutral-site contest at noon CST.
