WHITTIER, Calif. – Whittier posted 12 second half goals to hand Southwestern a 20-7 loss on Friday night.
Kaitlyn Campbell started SU off on the right note with a goal thirty seconds into the game, but Whittier quickly answered a minute later to kickoff a 5-1 run to put the Pirates down 5-2. Allison Schmitt scored two goals in the final 17 minutes to cap off a three goal first half, but Whittier had more fire power as they led 8-4 at the break.
Each team scored in the first five minutes, SU's coming as Schmitt assisted on Adrienne Dodd's goal, before Whittier rattled off six straight to increase their lead to 10, 15-5. Christina Rosendahl and Schmitt added back to back goals to move the deficit to eight, but Whittier ended the game with five unanswered to hand SU the loss.
Whittier led 27-22 in shots and 24-18 in ground balls. Southwestern struggled to take advantage of their free position opportunities, converting on just one of eight while Whittier scored on five of 10.
Schmitt was outstanding for the Pirates scoring four goals and assisting on one other for five points, also winning two draw controls. Shaina Denny led all scorers with seven goals and two assists for Whittier.
Southwestern falls to 4-7 on the year while Whittier improves to 5-5 overall. The Pirates remain in California to face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at 3 p.m. CST.
