Potent offense quieted by Gophers

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern women's lacrosse is ranked in the top 15 in the nation in points but struggled to get things going Wednesday night, falling 16-4 to Goucher College.

Campbell, who was 9th in the nation in goals and 15th in points coming into tonight's game, kicked off the scoring for the Pirates as Allison Schmitt found her diving towards goal five minutes into the game.

Goucher quickly tied the game 30 seconds later, winning the draw control and attacking the goal, and added two more goals to lead 3-1 ten minutes into the game.

Schmitt cut the deficit to one, 3-2, by going coast-to-coast to score in a one-on-one with the goalie. Goucher picked up the tempo and continued to control the draw as they mounted an 8-3 lead into halftime.

The Gophers picked up where they left off with four goals in the first nine minutes of the game to extend their lead to nine, 12-3. Schmitt got the Pirates on the scoreboard for the first time in the second half with 18:50 to play, but that is all SU could muster the remainder of the game as Goucher continued to pile it on until the final buzzer sounded, handing the Pirates their fifth loss of the season.

The Pirates trailed in shots 35-17 and ground balls 43-21 and committed 24 turnovers while Goucher committed 18. Caitlyn Stanyard recorded 11 saves on the evening.

The loss drops SU to 4-5 on the year while Goucher improves to 5-4. The Pirates host their final home game of the season on Sunday, taking on Western New England beginning at 1 p.m.
