Huge first half lifts Pirates to easy win

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern women's lacrosse rocketed out the gate and cruised to a 17-6 win over Augsburg College on Friday night.

Southwestern was hot at the start and had clear control of the game, scoring three goals in the first seven minutes and allowing Augsburg just two offensive possessions. The Pirates continued to roll and worked for easy goals as they increased their lead to 8-0 halfway through the period.

Just before the half, Augsburg got on a run and put away three straight goals to pull within seven, 10-3, but Kaitlyn Campbell snuck one past the goalie with one minute remaining in the half to push their lead back to eight, 11-3.

The Auggies struck first in the second half, scoring on a free position shot by Kayla Fuechtmann eight minutes in. Finally with 17:23 on the clock the Pirates got their first goal of the second half as Natalie Rivera cut her way through the defense and added another rolling shot at the 16 minute mark to put SU up 13-4.

A free position shot and goal during a penalty brought the Auggies within seven again, 13-6 with ten minutes remaining, but Southwestern again had the answer to push their lead back to ten, 16-6, thanks in part to two goals by Campbell.

Allison Schmitt had the final nail in the coffin as she punched home SU's 17th goal of the evening with one minute to go to arrive at the 17-6 final.

Southwestern won the shot count 34-19 and narrowly won the ground ball differential 32-31 while winning 17 of the 25 draw controls with Schmitt taking seven herself. The Pirate defense continued to be sharp as they forced Augsburg into 36 turnovers, led by Adrienne Dodd who caused four. Makaela Starks was all over the field as she gathered a game high eight groundballs in the win.

Offensively, Campbell had a huge night with six goals and one assist while Dodd scored three goals and Jordan Little and Schmitt had two assists each.

With the win Southwestern improves to 3-1 on the year. They have one more game to close their season opening homestand, facing Eastern University on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
