Women’s Golf Captures Sixth SCAC Title

With a 659 team score the Southwestern Pirates women's golf team captured the 2013 SCAC Championship on Sunday afternoon in Shreveport, La. It is the sixth time Southwestern has grabbed the title.

On day one, the women started strong by jumping out to a 12 stroke lead over the Tigers of Trinity. Southwestern held the top two spots and tied for the third lowest score after round one. Kelsey Coburn was in first with an opening round 81 and Lauren Boone was close behind in second with an 82. Karissa Speck came in tied for third with an 83 and Bernice Leonard in seventh with an 84. Keeley Coburn rounded out the first day with an 88 and finished tied for 12th.

Southwestern continued the strong team effort on day two to secure the win. Karissa Speck finished first for SU and second overall with a 163 (83-80) and Kelsey Coburn in third with a 164 (81-83). Lauren Boone snagged sixth with a 167 (82-85) and Keeley Coburn ninth with 169 strokes (88-81). Bernice Leonard finished the event tied for 10th with 170 strokes while Korey Coburn played individually and finished in 17th with a 185.

The nationally-ranked Pirates should earn a bid to the NCAA Championships. This year's event will be held in Destin, Fla. beginning on May 14th.
