Women's Basketball Fall Short to Trinity

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Battling to come back from a previous loss against Trinity, Southwestern women's basketball fell 73-64 in a neck and neck game Saturday evening.

The Pirates started the first quarter slow, with the first couple of baskets not finding their way through the net. After a few made free throws, things turned around with a jumper from Cecily Woolfolk and a three-pointer and layup from Courtney Maass to give Southwestern a seven-point lead at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, Southwestern kept the lead with Trinity not falling far behind. The Pirates were able to keep themselves in the game by drawing the foul and making a few extra free throws that helped them lead into the halftime 34-32.

Starting the third quarter, both the Tigers and Pirates would answer each other's shots. Going back and forth, both teams fought to try to stay with the other.  But with a few missed shots and a Pirate turnover, Trinity was able to pull ahead with a lead that they would keep for the rest of the game. However, the Pirates never gave Trinity more than a seven-point lead, and ended the third 51-55.

At the start of the forth Woolfolk was able to sink two free throws for the Pirates to make it a three-point game, however, Trinity gained the advantage with an 8-0 run over the Pirates, allowing a gap that would stay the rest of the game. With the clock ticking down, Southwestern was unable to catch up to Trinity's lead, ending the game 64-73.

The Pirates, now 9-13 and 8-5 in the conference, are now fourth in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) standings.

Notable players include Woolfolk, who lead the Pirates with 24 points, seven rebounds, three steals and one block. Maass totaled 14 points, eight assists with two steals, followed by Noel Pratts who put up 12 points for Southwestern.

Women's basketball now moves to finish their last away game of the season in Seguin, taking on the TLU Bulldogs. The game will take place Tuesday, Feb 12 at 5:30 p.m., and then the Pirates will finish their last two games at home before heading to SCAC Championships.
