Pirates Fade In Fourth Quarter, Lose to Rhodes

CONWAY, Ark. – The Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team faltered late in its first game at the Hendrix Basketball Classic, losing to Rhodes College 71-68.

Zhazze Brown led the Pirates with 19 points on 7-for-20 and Tori Callaway had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds off the bench to lead Southwestern. Both combined for 13 of Southwestern University's 19 points in the third quarter.

The Pirates shots 47.1 percent from the field, including 2-for-3 from deep in the third quarter while holding Rhodes to 14.3 percent shooting and 1-for-8 from the 3-point line, building an 18-point lead capped off by a Brown 3-pointer with three minutes remaining in the third.

Rhodes responded with a 10-2 run, getting to the free-throw line for 10 attempts over the final 2:30 of the third quarter to close the gap at 56-46.

Southwestern went ice cold in the fourth quarter, shooting just 21.1 percent from the field, missing all four of its 3-point attempts. Rhodes College worked inside, shooting 8-for-13 from the field (61.5 percent) and hitting eight free throws.

The Pirates held a seven-point lead late but committed three turnovers in the last 3:23, giving Rhodes the lead on an Allie Young steal and layup in the last 25 seconds with Young sealing the game with a late free throw for Rhodes.

Southwestern shot 34.8 percent from the field and 40 percent from deep, hitting 14 free throws on 63.6 percent shooting. The Pirates assisted on 17 of their 24 made field goals, with Courtney Maass leading the team with seven assists.

Rhodes College had four players in double figures, led by Lindsey Whiteside and Alyssa Owens, who each scored 14 points. Owens got to the free-throw line 10 times, making eight, and contributed nine rebounds and six assists. Alli Mayeux had 11 points and Moriah Muhammad had 10 points and 15 rebounds off the bench.

Rhodes shot 38.2 percent from the field and 28 percent from the 3-point line, making 22 free throws on 34 attempts. They outrebounded the Pirates 51-38, building a 17-11 advantage in second chance points.

With the loss, the Pirates drop to 1-6 on the season. They will return to the court tomorrow with a game against host team Hendrix College at 1:00 p.m.
