Pirates Fall Short to Schreiner at Home

GEORGETOWN - In a back-and-forth affair at the Robertson Center on Friday evening, the Southwestern University women's basketball team fell short to the Schreiner Mountaineers, 69-64, in SCAC women's basketball action.

Southwestern shot 26 of 74 (35%) from the field including 5 of 16 (31%) from deep and 7 of 12 (58%) from the line. On the other end, Schreiner had a big night shooting, going 26 of 49 (53%) from the field, 9 of 16 (56%) from deep, and 8 of 14 (57%) from the line.

The Pirates dominated the boards, outrebounding Schreiner 47-29, and forced 17 turnovers while only turning it over a season-low 13 times. Southwestern got 29 bench points and 20 second chance points.

Southwestern opened up at a 12-6 lead in the first four mninutes of the first quarter, but Schreiner responded by outscoring the Pirates 12-6 to close the at 18 a piece.

The Mountaineers opened the second half with seven straight points and built their lead out to a 12 thanks to a 14-2 run to start the quarter. Southwestern had a response of their own, closing the quarter on a 12-5 run to cut the deficit down to five, 37-32, going into the break.

Schreiner increased their lead to nine in the early goings of the third quarter, but an 11-2 run by the Pirates including four points each from sophomore Cecily Woolfolk and junior Loryn Hernandez made it a tie game after three quarters at 49.

The Mountaineers opened the fourth quarter with five straight points en rout to a 9-2 run to open up a 58-51 lead with 6:01 to play. Schreiner eventually got the lead out to 10 and did not look back despite a vailiant effort at the end by Southwestern.

Southwestern was led by Woolfolk with 14 points incluidng six boards and a steal while senior Madison Edwards poured in 10 points to go with four rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Freshman Noel Pratts scored nine points while Henandez and sophomore Zhazze Brown each scored seven off the bench. Junior Tori Carraway scored six to go with eight rebounds, five steals, three assists, and a block. 

Schreiner was led by Kendra Brown who scored a game-high 25 points to go with eight boards and three assists. Jordyn Villa added 11 points in the contest.

Southwestern falls to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in SCAC play. They return to action on Sunday as they welcome in 24th-ranked Trinity University for a 6 PM tip-off.
