Pirates Bounce Back with Road Win Over Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Southwestern University women's basketball team bounced back on Sunday afternoon as they took a conference road win over the Centenary Ladies by the score of 62-54 at the Gold Dome. 

The Pirates went 21 of 55 (38%) from the field including 1 of 3 (33%) from deep and 19 of 28 (68%) from the charity stripe. Centenary was 22 of 60 (37%) from the field, 4 of 14 (29%), and 6 of 17 (35%) from the free throw line. Southwestern dominated the boards, 43-32, and got a great boost from its bench, scoring 21 in the game.

An even first few minutes saw SU down 9-8 before a 7-0 run put the Pirates ahead 15-9. Southwestern woud lead 17-14 at the end of the first, but really took control in the second quartter, outscoring the Ladies 20-12 including a 16-4 run to close the half for a 37-26 lead at the break.

Centenary chipped away at the Pirates' lead in the third quarter, cutting the deficit down to four at one point. Southwestern went into the fourth quarter up 49-43.

The Ladies started the final quarter by outscoring Southwestern 5-1 to make it a 50-48 game, but Southwesern scored the next seven of the next nine points to move back ahead 57-50. Centenary tried to make one more run, but Southwestern closed the game at the free throw line for their first SCAC win of the season.

Junior Tori Carraway had a double-double, finishing with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and two steals while sophomore Zhazze Brown scored 13 points off the bench to go with three steals. Senior Brooke Swift scored eight and had five assists while sophomore Cecily Woolfolk had seven points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.

Senior Madison Edwards scored six to go with six rebounds and two steals while freshman Noel Pratts was big defensively off the bench, coming away with three steals.

Bre Frierson scored 15 for the Ladies while Jasmine Morris and Savanah Doty each had 12. 

Southwestern moves to 1-1 in SCAC play at 5-8 overall. They return home on Friday as they welcome in Schreiner for a 7:30 PM tip at the Robertson Center.
