GEORGETOWN - A total of 11 different Southwestern Pirates scored as big first and third quarters led the Southwestern University Pirates to a 72-55 win over Hardin-Simmons, snapping a three game losing streak, on Wednesday afternoon at the Robertson Center.
Southwestern shot 24 of 55 (44%) from the field and connected on four 3-pointers while holding the Cowgirls to 19 of 64 (30%) shooting and 2 of 12 from deep (17%). Southwestern got to the free throw line 30 times, connecting on 20 (67%).
The Pirates outrebounded the Cowgirls 42-40 and had 43 points off the bench. Southwestern did have 21 turnovers, but were able to turn over Hardin-Simmons 19 times on the aftenroon.
Southwestern jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes and pushed their lead out to 17-4 en route to a 20-8 lead after one period of play. Southwestern was red hot, shooting 47% in the first period and holding Hardin-Simmons to 13% shooting.
The Pirates maintained their 12 point lead all throughout the second half, using great defense to hold a 31-19 lead at the break.
Southwestern used an amazing third quarter to put the game completely out of reach, shooting 5 of 10 in the period and getting to the free throw line 14 times to build a lead as high as 27. They again held Hardin-Simmons in check, this time holding them to 20% as they outscored the Cowgirls 21-9 in the period.
From there, Southwestern emptied the bench and ran the clock out to eventually earn the 17-point win, putting together one of their best all-around performances thus far this season.
Sophomore Naomi Brown had seven boards while Carraway pulled down five while Carraway had a pair of assists and steals. Sophomore Cecily Woolfolk had a nice all-around game with seven points, two steals, and two blocks.
Jasmine Croskey led Hardin-Simmons with nine points while Addison Garcia pitched in eight points.
The Pirates move to 3-6 overall and will take some time off with the holiday season rapidly approaching, They will return to action on December 30th as they will head to Abilene, Texas for a 4 PM matchup with McMurry.
