Pirates Struggle in Road Loss to UMHB

BELTON, Texas - The Southwestern University women's basketball team shot 17 of 56 from the field (30%) and were outrebounded 52-37 as they could not find any rhythm on Sunday afternoon in a 68-50 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The Pirates were excellent from the free throw line, shooting 13 of 16 (81%), but could not overcome turnovers, giving it away 24 times to UMHB's 16. The Cru shot 25 of 72 (35%) from the field to go with eight 3-pointers. The Cru got 30 points off of turnovers on the evening.

Southwestern spotted the Cru 10 points in the first two minutes, finding themselves down 10-0. It would be an even matchup for the final eight minutes, but the Pirates would still find themselves down 10 going into the second quarter, 20-10.

UMHB pushed their lead out to as high as 14 in the second quarter, but Southwestern was able to cut it down to eight, going into the break down 34-26.

It would be all Cru in the third quarter as they put the game out of reach, outscoring the Pirates 21-10, leading by as many as 22, and holding a 55-36 lead going into the fourth. Southwestern tried to find a run in them in the final quarter, but it was not enough as the Cru took the 18-point win.

Sophomore Zhazze Brown scored 12 points off the bench while sophomore Cecily Woolfolk added seven points. Junior Tori Carraway scored six points on 3 of 3 shooting while sophomore Catherine Staskawicz pitched in six points off the bench.

The Cru were led by Kendall Rollins with 20 points while Kelsey Vanpelt scored 11 off the bench.

Southwestern moves to 2-5 overall and will take some time off before returning to action on February 19th as they will take on UMHB at the Robertson Center at 3 PM.
