Schreiner knocks off Pirates in OT

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Schreiner posted 21 points in overtime to hand Southwestern an 89-82 loss Saturday afternoon.

Southwestern started well and seemed to have full control of the contest but only led by four after the first quarter 18-14.

Things reminded tight until Southwestern battened down the hatches defensively and went up eight, 25-17 midway through the second. After Zhazze Brown's layup gave SU their largest lead of the game, nine points with just over three to play in the half, the Mountaineers went on a 10-0 run to take the lead 32-31 with 46 seconds remaining.

The lead change was brief, however, as Madison Edwards buried a three with just seconds left, sending the Pirates into the locker room up two, 34-32.

Schreiner hung close through the second half and led by eight, 68-60, with 4:33 remaining in the fourth quarter. Southwestern held the Mountaineers scoreless the rest of the way, tying the game on Naomi Brown's jumper to send the game into overtime.

Schreiner scored the first points of the extra frame and never looked back, sealing the win from the free throw line.

The Pirates were led by Tori Carroway with 21 points while Cecily Woolfolk chipped in 20 with three blocks. Madison Edwards added 13 points and Olivia Podaras led with nine rebounds.

Southwestern (5-9, 2-2) will regroup and have a quick turnaround as they face Texas Lutheran (12-3, 4-0) on Tuesday evening for a 6 pm tip.
