Southwestern drops home SCAC opener 77-71 to #12 Trinity

GEORGETOWN, Texas – A feisty Southwestern team was within one point with three and a half to play against #12 Trinity but was unable to realize the upset Friday evening.

Southwestern hit the offensive glass hard and that is what kept the Pirates in the game as they got 10 second chance points in the first half and trailed by just seven, 39-32, at halftime.

SU's post play early in the third quarter cut into the Tiger lead and kept Southwestern in the game. Zhazze Brown's three pulled Southwestern within four and then Madison Edwards's jumper with 3:31 remaining capped off an 11-0 run that brought SU all the way within one, 64-63.

The offensive streak ended there as the Pirates scored just three field goals in the final three and a half minutes, falling 77-71 after Edward's three at the buzzer.

Cecily Woolfolk led Southwestern offensively with 20 points as the Pirates shot 47.5% from the floor and 50% from three point range. Madison Edwards posted her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

SU was forced into 27 turnovers in the loss, allowing TU 38 points off turnovers.

Southwestern (5-9, 2-1) remains at home to face Schreiner University (3-11, 1-2) Saturday afternoon for a 4 pm tip.
