GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern controlled the first three quarters of the contest but ran out of steam against #13 George Fox Friday afternoon, falling 78-64.
Southwestern blazed out of the gates with an 8-0 run and held a potent Bruin offense that averages over 80 points a game to just 10 in the first frame, leading by nine after the first quarter.
GFU turned up the pressure defensively and pulled with four points with three and a half to go, but the Pirates continued to dominate in transition and extended their lead back to ten. George Fox hit a three in the final seconds of the half to cut into the lead, but Southwestern still had an eight point advantage at the break, 38-30.
Tori Carraway posted 11 points in the half while the Pirate defense held George Fox to 33% from the field and 11.1% from three point range.
With a new game plan George Fox cut into the Pirates' lead and was able to claw their way to within three, 54-51, by the end of the third quarter.
GFU outscored SU 27-10 in the fourth quarter as Southwestern scored just two field goals in the final frame.
Carraway and Madison Edwards led with 12 points a piece while Olivia Podaras and Cecily Woolfolk added in ten each. GFU's Kaitlin Jamieson led all scorers with 16 points.
Southwestern (3-7) remains at home to close out 2016, facing McMurry University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
