Mary Hardin-Baylor defeats Southwestern in season opener, 80-70

BELTON, Texas – Tori Carraway scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but Mary Hardin-Baylor held on to defeat Southwestern in Tuesday's season opener, 80-70.

The Pirates (0-1) trimmed the lead to 54-50 after Cecily Woolfolk hit a pair of free throws with 3:07 left in the third quarter. However, the Cru (1-0) responded with a 7-2 run to close out the frame.

Olivia Podaras' 3-pointer with 8:22 left in the contest allowed Southwestern to cut the lead to 63-57, but it was as close as the Bucs could get the rest of the way.

Madison Edwards joined Carraway in double digits with 10 points. She also tied for the team-high with eight boards.

The Pirates will host Hardin-Simmons Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Robertson Center.
