Women's basketball earns spot in SCAC Championship game

With a 76-69 win over Schreiner University, Southwestern women's basketball punched their ticket to the SCAC Championship game on Sunday set for noon.

Southwestern wasted no time showing why they are the #1 seed, opening the game on a 9-0 run. Schreiner finally got rolling, however, and pulled within one, 14-15 with 11 minutes to play. The Pirates closed the half on a run and led by as many as 12, taking a seven point lead, 32-25, into the locker room.

As the second half got underway, Southwestern saw their lead balloon to 13 and maintained the advantage the rest of the way. Southwestern was in the bonus with 14 minutes to go in the second half and took advantage, earning 25 points from the free throw line in the second half alone.

Down the stretch, Annie Bourne was all over the boards and kept the Pirates lead intact by keeping Schreiner to just one shot and allowing the Pirates to work more time off the clock with offensive rebounds. Schreiner had one final push but committed a costly turnover on what seemed to be the game tying possession and forced a five point swing in Southwestern's favor. The Pirates took advantage and closed out the game for the win.

Jordan Owens led Southwestern in scoring with 22 points but Bourne posted 21 points and 17 boards on the afternoon. Audrey Garcia chipped in 13 points, all in the second half. Owens also had six rebounds and a game-high six assists. Schreiner was led by Sabriyyah Fennell with 19 points and eight rebounds.

The Pirates were hot offensively, shooting 45.7% from the floor and 40% from three point range while holding a scrappy Schreiner squad to 38.2% from the floor and 26.9% from long range. SU did commit five more turnovers than SCH, 19-14, but won the battle of the boards 38-35.

Southwestern heads to the SCAC Championship game on Sunday where they face the winner of the second semifinal, Texas Lutheran and Trinity. Game time is set for noon.
