Pirates dominate boards to defeat ‘Roos

Southwestern out-rebounded Austin College 53-39 to win 65-51 and improve to 9-11 and 7-2 in the SCAC at home on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a battle with five lead changes and five ties, but Southwestern battled off poor shooting to take a four point lead into the locker room, 28-24.

Valerie Logan led at the break with seven points while Annie Bourne was all over the glass with eight first half rebounds including six offensive.

The Pirates opened the second half on a 12-0 run to increase their lead to 16, 40-24, at the blink of an eye. Austin hung close, however, and cut the lead to eight with 12 minutes to play.

Erin Riley hit a pair of free throws with just under four minutes to play to pull the 'Roos within eight, 55-47. AC pulled as close as six with 1:30, but Southwestern did enough defensively and on the glass to close out the game for the win.

Annie was 43 points from being a 1000 point scorer coming into tonight's game and within 40 rebounds of the SCAC career rebounding record. She posted 10 points and a game high 16 rebounds to move to 1059 rebounds and 967 points for her career.

Jordan Owens led all scorers with 17 points and Logan chipped in 14 on 5-10 shooting from the floor and 2-3 from three point range. After a tough first half from the charity stripe, Southwestern shot 90% from the free throw line, 10-11. Austin College had just one player in double-figures, Erin Riley, with 10 points.

The Pirates move into second place in the SCAC with the win and are two wins away from securing a bid to the SCAC Conference Championship. They remain at home to face Trinity on Friday at 6 p.m.
