Pirates suffer first SCAC loss at hands of Mountaineers

Southwestern dropped a shocker on Saturday afternoon, falling 67-61 to Schreiner University. It was their first conference loss of the season.

Schreiner suffered their first loss of the conference season on Friday night, falling to Texas Lutheran University on opening night of their new gymnasium.

At the break, Southwestern had a slight lead, 25-22, over the Mountaineers, but Kelsie Jackson hit back-to-back threes to open the second half and Southwestern never regained the lead.

The Pirates were held without a field goal in the final two minutes of the game and Schreiner made three of four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Southwestern shot 48% from the floor and 35% form three point range, but committed 21 turnovers while forcing just 10. Place once again led the Pirates with 17 points off the bench. Annie Bourne added in 12 points and 11 rebounds while Jordan Owens added 11 points and Valerie Logan ten.

Schreiner was led by Jackson and Sabriyyah Fennell who posted 15 points each.

Southwestern falls to 6-10 on the year and 4-1 in the SCAC while Schreiner improves to 4-9 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Pirates remain on the road to face the University of Dallas on Friday at 6 p.m. in Irving.
