WBB snaps TU win streak to remain perfect in SCAC play

The Southwestern-Trinity women's basketball lived up to its billing on Friday night in San Antonio as the Pirates pulled out a 50-49 win over the Tigers to move to a perfect 4-0 in the SCAC.

By holding TU to just six field goals in the opening frame, Southwestern took an eight point lead into the break, 25-17.

Trinity scored the first seven points of the second half to quickly bring the game even 25-25. With a jump shot from Monica Holguin with 13:34 to play, the Tigers took the lead for the first time in the frame.

After three ties Southwestern took control on Valerie Logan's layup, 42-40, with eight minutes remaining. Trinity pulled ahead again, but Audrey Garcia's three with one minute to play was the final field goal of the game as Southwestern's defense took over and shutdown a tough Trinity offense to seal the win.

McKamie Place led all scorers with 12 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor while Jordan Owens and Annie Bourne added in 11 each. Owens also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the win as the Pirates out-rebounded TU 40-38.

Southwestern held Trinity to 31% from the floor and 30.4% from three point range and allowed just 10 free throws. SU shot 33.3% from the floor and 25.9% from long range and made one more free throw.

The Pirates move to 6-9 on the year and 4-0 in the SCAC while Trinity falls to 11-3 overall, 2-1 in conference. Southwestern heads over I-10 to face Schreiner who just posted their first conference loss of the year, falling 67-51 to Texas Lutheran. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Kerrville.
