Pirates drop double overtime thriller

Southwestern and Concordia needed two extra periods to decide their contest as the Pirates were outscored 15-8 in the final frame to fall 85-78 in double overtime on Tuesday.

SU had a four point lead, 40-36, at the break but went cold in the second half. Southwestern's rich offense was allowed just 24 points in the second frame as Concordia was able to pull ahead by as many as nine with 10:47 to play.

The Pirates battled back and tied the game, 64-64, with one minute to play with a layup by Annie Bourne. Bourne again had the equalizer in the first overtime as Audrey Garcia found her open and Bourne nailed the shot as time expired to tie the game 70-70.

The Tornados controlled the second overtime as Southwestern was never closer than two points in the final frame as SU garnered the loss.

The Pirates shot 40.9% from the floor and 28.6% from three point range while holding Concordia to 35.4% from the floor, but committed 25 turnovers and forced just 15.

Owens led with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Bourne posted 16 points and 16 boards. Olivia Podaras added in 12 points. Concordia was led by Nadine Fadelle who had 25 points in the win.

Southwestern drops to 2-9 on the year while Concordia improves to 3-5 overall. The Pirates return to the court after the new year, opening SCAC conference action against Texas Lutheran University on Saturday, January 3rd at 2 p.m.
