Women's basketball fends off Cowgirls

Southwestern brought home a 75-68 victory over Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday night in Abilene.

Neither team led by more than five points in a tightly contested first half, and the Pirates took a 38-37 lead into the halftime locker room.

Southwestern came out in the second half and had an 11-2 run out of halftime to push the lead to 49-39. They eventually pushed it to 66-50 with 9:15 to play.

The Cowgirls responded and started chipping away. They used an 18-2 run from the 8:46 mark to the 1:59 mark to tie the game on a Joanna Daniel jumper at the free throw line to tie the game at 68. Southwestern then scored the final seven points over the final two minutes for the win.  

HSU committed a season-low six turnovers and hit nine 3-pointers in the game. Southwestern outrebounded the Cowgirls 41-31 and shot 48.3 percent in the game.

Jordan Owens had 17 points to lead Southwestern and Annie Bourne had 13 points and 12 rebounds. Valerie Logan had 14 points and seven assists.

Both teams are now 2-6 on the year. Southwestern remains on the road to face Rust College on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
