Second chance points result in Pirate loss

Louisiana College posted 21 offensive rebounds and 21 second chance points to hand Southwestern a 75-73 loss at home on Sunday.

Jordan Owens won the opening tip, tapping the ball ahead to Madison Eschle for an easy layup to take the lead out of the gate. Louisiana College quickly got in the game, however, with a 20-2 run in the opening five minutes.

A pair of free throws from Owens cut the Wildcats' lead to ten, 34-24, with six minutes to play in the first. LC's quick transition offense kept SU on their toes, but Southwestern was able to trim the lead to five, 37-32, by halftime.

Audrey Garcia led with nine points and Annie Bourne returned to form with 10 boards.

LC opened the second half with a 7-0 run and maintained the double digit advantage through the halfway mark of the second period.

MaKamie Place's three with just under ten minutes to play brought Southwestern within seven, 57-50. Southwestern continued to press and fought to within three, 66-63, with 5:30 remaining. Brianna Turney followed with a put back, pulling the Pirates within one, 66-65.

SU hit the offensive glass, getting four shots in one possession. Owens hit an eight foot jumper to pull the Pirates within two, 75-73 with ten ticks left.

LC missed the free throw, giving Southwestern a shot at the win or tie, but Owens' jumper rimmed out to give Louisiana College the win.

Southwestern shot 40% from the floor and 12.5% from three point range and was led by Owens with 18 points. Garcia added in 11 and Place 10. Bourne ended with 13 rebounds.

Kaci Willis posted 20 points to lead the Wildcats who shot 37.7% from the floor and 25% from long range.

Following the loss, Southwestern falls to 1-4 on the year while LC remains undefeated at 4-0. Southwestern returns to the road to face St. Edward's University in Austin on Wednesday, December 3rd at 5:30 pm.
