Women’s basketball bested by #10 WashU in championship

Southwestern fell behind early and couldn't make up ground in the second half as they fell to #10 Washington University (Mo.) in the championship game of the McWilliams Classic Saturday.

The Pirates were outscored 54-10 in the first half, making just eight field goals and shooting 24.2% from the field.

In the second half, Southwestern got more aggressive offensively and got the to free throw line 14 times while shooting 37% from the floor, but the deficit was just too much to overcome as the second half came to a close.

Jordan Owens led with 19 points on 8-18 shootings, 2-3 from three-point range. Annie Bourne added in 12 points while Madison Eschle joined Bourne and Owens with five rebounds each to lead Southwestern. The Pirates were outrebounded 35-24 in the loss.

Washington was led by Melissa Gilkey who scored 21 points and added 11 rebounds.

Now 1-2 on the season, Southwestern returns home to host the Thanksgiving Invitational, facing off first against Howard Payne University on Saturday at 2pm.
