Hot Shooting Tigers Defeat Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern women's basketball led most of the game but a fiery Trinity team took the lead late to defeat SU 101-89 on Saturday night.

Southwestern came out of the gate hot, picking steals defensively and turning them into easy baskets on the offensive end to lead early, 17-6. Trinity was able to hang close by attacking the basket and getting easy points from the free throw line.

Another run late in the half allowed SU to push their lead to 13, 36-23 on Audrey Garcia's three with 6:30 to play. With deep three pointers, Trinity's Hannah Coley nearly single-handedly kept the Tigers in the contest, going 4-5 from deep in the first half.

Even with Trinity shooting over 50% from the field and 44% from three-point range, Southwestern took a 10 point lead into halftime, largely by forcing TU into 10 turnovers for seven SU steals and 10 points off turnovers.

Madison Eschle paced the Pirates with 14 points while Chelsea Leeder added in 11 in the frame. Coley ended the half with 18 points.

Eschle posted the first points of the second half from the free throw line, but Trinity charged back and pulled within five, 56-51, with 15:47 to play.

With a pair of free throws followed by a layup from Anecia Rchardson with just under 10 minutes to play the Tigers took their first lead of the contest, 69-67. Two minutes and a few SU turnovers later Trinity had pushed their lead to eight, 78-70.

A three-point play by Valerie Logan and a three-pointer by Jordan Owens tied the game for the third time at 82, but Trinity responded right back to take the lead and never gave it back to arrive at the 101-89 final.

Southwestern shot 42.5% from the floor and 24% from three point range while Trinity was an amazing 61.7% from the field and 46.2% from three-point range. SU outrebounded Trinity 41-31 but ended up committing three more turnovers, 18-15.

Leeder and Eschle each ended with 18 points to lead Southwestern while Owens added 15 and Bourne 10. Bourne led all players on the boards with 13 rebounds. Coley led all scorers with 33 points.

Southwestern falls to 10-3 in the SCAC and 16-7 overall while Trinity improves to 19-4 and 13-0. SU kicks off the final weekend of regular season action on Friday night, facing the University of Dallas at 6 pm for the annual Play for Kay Pink Out game to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
