Bourne’s Huge Game Not Enough for Pirates Win

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Annie Bourne had a huge night for the Southwestern women's basketball team, posting 23 points and 22 rebounds, but Southwestern wasn't able to win the game, falling 78-66 to Trinity on Wednesday night.

It was the battle both teams expected in the first half, but Southwestern managed to take an early lead and maintain it. The Pirates posted a 12 point lead 31-19 after Annie Bourne's jumper in the paint with five minutes to play in the half. Trinity fired back, however, and pulled within two points with a 12-2 run by the halftime buzzer, setting the score at 33-31 to start the second half.

SU scored the first points of the second half with a three from Madison Eschle, but Trinity soon pulled ahead 37-36 at the 16 minute mark for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. The lead pinballed back and forth from one team to the next through the next five minutes, but then Trinity began to pull away.

Southwestern wasn't able to regain the lead as Trinity pulled further and further away. SU hit a dry patch with eight minutes to play, allowing TU to go on a 9-0 run to go ahead by 13, 64-51. The Pirates pulled within six points with four minutes to play, but the Tigers secured the win from the free throw line.

The Pirates committed 25 turnovers while shooting 36.1% from the floor, 17.2% from three point range. Trinity shot 36.5% from the field and 27.3% from beyond the arc while committing 20 turnovers.

Chelsea Leeder added in 13 points to Bourne's 23. Trinity's Anecia Richardson led all scorers with 24 points.

Southwestern drops to 16-6 on the year and 10-2 in the SCAC in the loss. They remain in second place in the conference behind Trinity who improves to 18-4 overall and 12-0 in the conference. The two teams square off for the third time this season on Saturday in Georgetown at 5 p.m.
