Big Runs Give Women’s Basketball Easy Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Consistent runs throughout the first and second half allowed Southwestern to gather a big lead and retain it to defeat Austin College 78-59 on Saturday evening.

After a scoreless minute and a half, a transition layup by Katelyn Bartell, assisted by Chelsea Leeder, broke the stalemate and set off a scoring spree for the Pirates. Less than one minute later Southwestern found themselves up by seven, 7-0.

Three straight baskets by Brooke Melton brought the 'Roos back in the game, 11-8, but another big Pirate push found SU up 24-11 at the half way mark. When the halftime buzzer sounded, Southwestern had a 16 point lead, 43-27.

Southwestern shot an astonishing 60% from the floor and 40% from three point range in the first half, led by Jordan Owens' 12 points.

The Pirates came out of the locker room with the same ferocity they closed the half with and pushed their lead to 26, 55-29 with 14:36 on the clock.

Austin College had one last spurt left in them and pulled within 14, 61-46, but a well-placed timeout by Coach Brinkoeter allowed SU to regroup and get back in the groove.

It was smooth sailing the rest of the way as SU secured the 78-59 final without being threatened again.

Southwestern was led by Annie Bourne who posted 22 points and nine rebounds in the win. Owens added 16 and Chelsea Leeder 12. AC's Erin Riley led all scorers with 24 points.

The Pirates improve to 16-5 on the year and 10-1 in the SCAC while Austin College falls to 9-13 and 3-9. The win sets up a rematch with Southwestern as they look to earn a spot back in the top of the conference, facing Trinity in San Antonio on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
