Four Pirates Earn All-SCAC Honors

SUWANEE, Ga. - Highlighted by SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year Jordan Owens (pictured, left) and All-SCAC First Team selection Chelsea Leeder (pictured, right), the Southwestern women's basketball team had four members named to the All-SCAC team announced Saturday evening at the SCAC Conference Tournament.

Leeder, a sophomore forward from Nacogdoches, Texas, was the conference's Newcomer-of-the-Year last season and has been an offensive force for the Pirates all season. Leeder is averaging 17 points per game, tops for the Pirates and fourth in the conference. She is second in the SCAC in made three-pointers and field goals with 66 and 154, respectively, on the year and third in the conference in made three-pointers per game at just over two and a half.

Leeder secured the Pirates #1 seed with ten unanswered points in the final two minutes at the University of Dallas last weekend and hit the game winning layup with tenths of a second left on the clock as SU beat Colorado College. She posted a season high 28 points in the first two contests of the year and nearly matched it with 27 points in both games against the University of Dallas.

Owens, a first-year forward from Richardson, Texas, has dominated both ends of the court, leading the Pirates in field goal percentage at 44.3% and is second on the team in points and rebounds, averaging 14.7 points and 7 rebounds per game. In addition to the Newcomer-of-the-Year honor, Owens was also an All-SCAC Honorable Mention selection. She has scored in double figures in all but three games including a season-high 26 points in the season opener at Texas Lutheran. Owens has posted six double-doubles on the year and pulled down a season high 16 rebounds against Trinity on February 4th. 

Anna Fareed, a senior guard from Kingwood, Texas, earned an All-SCAC Third Team selection for her outstanding play in her final season. With a two huge games her final home weekend, including a season-high 25 point effort in her final home game against Hendrix, Fareed eclipsed the 1000 point mark for her career and was named SCAC Player-of-the-Week for her efforts. She leads the team and is fourth in the conference in three-point percentage at 38.2% on the season and averages 11.8 points per game, third most on the team.

Joining Owens as an All-SCAC Honorable Mention and rounding out the Pirates' selections is first-year forward Annie Bourne. Bourne has been a rebounding machine for Southwestern, pulling down 10.1 boards per game to lead Southwestern and place second in the conference.  She also averages the fourth most points per game for SU at 8.8 and leads the team in double-doubles with eight on the year. Bourne posted a season-high 21 points at Trinity on February 1 and pulled down a season-high 18 rebounds agains the University of Dallas on December 17.

Southwestern lost in the semifinals on Saturday night to Millsaps College to close out the season with a 15-12 overall record.
