GEORGETOWN, Texas - Anna Fareed left a lasting mark in her final home game of the season for Southwestern going 8-8 from the field, 3-3 from three point, and 3-3 from the free throw line in the first half to give the Pirates a comfortable 26 point lead over Hendrix at halftime. SU won the contest 88-71.
Fareed started as if she owned the place, scoring Southwestern's first six points of the game and 16 of their first 24, assisting on two others to contribute 20 points, to give SU a nine point lead with 9:30 to go in the first half.
The Pirates began to pick up full court, wreaking havoc on the Warriors and pushed their lead to 15 points with a 15-0 run spanning just under four minutes. Fareed scored her team high 22nd point of the half on a layup after stealing the ball on defense and taking it the length of the court to move their lead to 20, 40-20 with 5:24 to go in the half.
Southwestern saw the lead balloon to 26 points on Valerie Logan's layup with 4:12 and the Pirates rode out the rest of the half, taking a comfortable 26 point lead, 57-31, into the break. SU was remarkable from the floor shooting 61.8% from the field, 60% from three point range and 90% from the free throw line.
Hendrix came out of halftime revived and embarked on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 17, 59-42 five minutes into the second half. The Pirates went back to the full court press that was so effective in the first half and pushed their lead back to 23 points, 78-55, with just over six minutes remaining.
After a Warrior time out they deployed the full court press as well, but Logan easily navigated through the defense like a seasoned veteran, helping Southwestern to maintain a comfortable lead as the clock wound down.
A late rally by Hendrix brought the Warriors within 14, 85-71, with 1:17 to go, but Southwestern was just too far ahead for them to make any headway as the Pirates closed out the 88-71 win.
Fareed led all scorers with 25 points while Jordan Owens followed close behind with 23 and was also the leading rebounder for SU with nine boards. Leeder posted 16 points for the game and was the only other Pirate in double-digits. Maggie Bigg-Scribner led Hendrix with 20 points while Jamie Tate, who broke the SCAC single season rebounding record tonight, pulled down a game high 10 boards.
Southwestern closed out the match with an impressive 52.7% from the field and 58.3% from long range while holding HC to 40.6% from the field and 33.3% from three point range.
The Pirates, now 12-11 on the year and 9-5 in the SCAC, hit the road for the final games of the regular season, facing Austin College on Friday night in Sherman.
