Second Half Runs Push Tigers Past Pirates

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Trinity put together two big runs in the second half to defeat Southwestern 85-75 on Wednesday night. The loss drops SU to 9-11 on the year and 6-5 in the SCAC while Trinity improves to 8-12 overall and 6-5 in conference.

It was a back-and-forth battle through the first 10 minutes of the first half, but Southwestern took control and led by seven points, 22-15 with 8:31 to play in the half. Trinity put together a run to briefly take the lead two minutes later, 23-22. Both teams continued to fight and Trinity took a one point advantage into the halftime break, 35-34, after a last second layup by Taylor Hollins.

The Tigers were able to maintain the momentum after halftime and shot out of the gate to lead by seven, 46-39, three minutes into the final frame. Annie Bourne almost single handedly brought Southwestern back even with five points over the next three minutes while SU's defense forced TU into tough shots.

Trinity pressed on to go up by eight but the Pirates had the resolve to fight back and tied the game for the sixth time, 62-62, with just over seven minutes remaining. It was all Trinity for the next five minutes as the Tigers orchestrated a 12-2 run to post a ten point lead, 74-64 with two minutes to go.

Southwestern continued to press offensively but Trinity always had the answer as they remained out of the Pirates' reach to the final buzzer.

Bourne had an outstanding night with 21 points, 13 rebounds and four steals, leading Southwestern in all categories. Chelsea Leeder added in 20 points while Jordan Owens was just one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine boards. Trinity's Murphy Burns led all scorers with 26 points.

Southwestern will look to settle the score on Saturday as the two teams square off once again. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
