Majors Dominate in the Paint to Defeat Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Millsaps scored 46 points in the paint to defeat Southwestern 79-60 on Friday night.

Millsaps took an early 13-5 lead with layups in the half-court set and in transition but Southwestern was able to claw back by holding the Majors to just one shot per possession and evened the count 18-18 with nine minutes to go in the half on a three by Jordan Owens (pictured). It was a dog fight the rest of the half as neither team was able to gain control and posted a 29-29 tie at the break.

MC got 20 of their 29 points in the paint while fast break points were the highlight of the half for SU with 11 points in transition.

The second half started just as the first with Millsaps pulling ahead by seven, 38-31, just two minutes into the frame by working the ball inside. The Pirates went back to their full court press that was so successful in the first half and worked to within eight, 49-41, with 12:19 to play.

After Valerie Logan's jumper at the free throw line in transition put the Pirates within striking distance, 53-55 with 6:30 to go. Second chance points pushed the Majors back on top by seven, 60-52 with 4:45 on the clock.

A Millsaps timeout halted their run, allowing SU to regroup for the final five minutes. The Majors were able to pull away again, however, and pushed their lead back to eight, 68-60, with 2:55 remaining on fastbreaks and extra possessions.

With three minutes to play the Pirates took a timeout and planned their attack to capture the lead once again. A layup on the out-of-bounds play gave Millsaps a ten point lead and after Pirate turnovers and converting on free throws the Majors pulled away to the 79-60 final.

Owens led the way with 13 points and 10 boards while Chelsea Leeder chipped in 11 points. Annie Bourne pulled down eight rebounds. Two players for Millsaps posted a double-double in the win. Janice Okeke had 20 points and 14 boards while Shate Morton had 17 points and 16 rebounds.

The Pirates shot 31.7% and an uncharacteristic 16.7% from three point range while MC went 43.1% from the field and 44.4% from three. Millsaps won the rebounding battle 48-40.

Southwestern falls to 9-9 on the year and 6-3 in the SCAC with the loss but remain in first place in the West with Colorado College falling to Birmingham-Southern. Millsaps improves to 17-2 overall and 9-1 in conference action.
