Women's Basketball Rebounds with Big Win

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Pirates were firing on all cylinders as they defeated the Sewanee Tigers 78-50 on Saturday night. Southwestern improves to 9-8 on the year and 6-2 in the SCAC and are tops in the SCAC West.

SU scored the first five points of the game and rattled off a 20-8 run that encompassed the opening ten minutes and held the Tigers to only 20 first half points to take a 20 point lead, 40-20 into halftime.

The second half was more of the same with the Pirates continuing to dominate, pushing their lead to 25, 59-34, with 9:29 to play. The lead dropped under 20 points just briefly from that point on as Southwestern easily commanded the game. Lashelle Williams' three-pointer with 39 seconds to go gave the Pirates their biggest lead of the game and the 28 point win, 78-59.

Southwestern shot 43% from the floor and 32% from three-point range, led by Chelsea Leeder's game high 19 points. Anna Fareed added in 17 going 6-10 from the floor and an outstanding 5-9 from three point range, while Annie Bourne posted her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Sewanee was held to just 34% from the field and 14.3% from three-point range. Only two Tigers were in doubles figures with 10 points coming from Alex Ginsburg and Kayla Sewell.

SU dominated the boards with 49 rebounds and committed just 14 turnovers while forcing 23.

The Pirates return home to host the second and third place teams in the SCAC East Division, Millsaps and Rhodes, on Friday and Saturday night, respectively.
