Pirates' Deadly Shooting Takes Out Warriors

Pirates' Deadly Shooting Takes Out Warriors

CONWAY, Ark. - Southwestern shot 50% from three point range, 75% (6-8) in the second half, to earn a 69-59 victory over Hendrix College on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Pirates to 4-3 on the year, 1-1 in the SCAC.

SU's Brianna Guevara (pictured) score the first basket of the game and the Pirates steadily built a lead, pushing their advantage to as many as 20 points while holding the Warriors to abysmal shooting percentages of 15% from the field and 0% from three point range with their stifling defense. Southwestern took a 17 point lead, 35-18, into halftime.

It was the same story in the second half with Annie Bourne hitting the first basket to push SU ahead even further and led by 26, 53-27, with just under 14 minutes to play. Hendrix refused to give up and were able to cut the lead to single digits, nine points 66-57 with 4:35 to go. That is close as they would get as SU picked up their defensive presence to close out the game.

Senior Anna Fareed was nearly unstoppable, going 7-13 from the floor and 4-6 from three point range for a game high 20 points. Sophomore Chelsea Leeder added in 15 off the bench and Jordan Owens added in 10. Jamie Tate led for Hendrix with 19 points and 16 rebounds.

Hendrix was able to claw their way back into the game from the free throw line with 30 attempts in the game while SU had just 11.

Southwestern remains on the road as they return to non-conference action to face NAIA Texas Wesleyan on Saturday.
