Tigers Edge out Pirates in Conference Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- Colorado College took the lead five minutes into the game and never relinquished it as Southwestern dropped their conference opener, 77-67.

The first half was a see-saw battle with five ties and 13 lead changes through the first 15 minutes of the game, but the Tigers closed the half on a 10-5 run to send the Pirates into the break down four, 41-37.

Anna Fareed opened the second half with a three, pulling Southwestern within one point, but Colorado went on a 9-0 run to lead by ten, 50-40 with 15-15 to play. SU managed to pull within three points twice in the second half but couldn't get the big bucket they needed to regain the lead as Colorado pushed ahead to a double-digit lead as the game came to a close.

Southwestern was strong defensively, recording 17 steals and forcing Colorado into 24 turnovers, but stalled offensively shooting just 31.6% from the field and 54.2% from the free throw line.

Jordan Owens (pictured) led with 20 points in 29 minutes of action while Fareed chipped in 18. Annie Bourne led all rebounders with 12 boards. Colorado's Becky Luetjen led all scorers with 25 points.

The Pirates move to 3-3 on the year and 0-1 in the SCAC. They remain on the road to face Hendrix College on Sunday.
