Sharp Shooting Bobcats Hand Pirates First Loss

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - St. Thomas (MN) shot 50.8% from the field and 44.4% from three point range to give Southwestern their first loss of the season, 76-63 Saturday night at the Trinity Classic.

SU started the game strong, jumping out to a 10-2 lead but St. Thomas charged back, taking control with 13 minutes to go in the half, 15-14. The Pirates took back the advantage with 10 minutes to go and held onto a 10 point lead 43-33 heading into the break.

The Bobcats were able to cut into the lead, 45-41, at the start of the second half as Southwestern was held scoreless until the 16:14 mark and then STT tied the game 49-49 with 12:18 to play.

Just a minute later the Bobcats scored to take the lead and never reliquished it as the Pirates were held just out of reach as the clock ticked down to the 76-63 final.

Jordan Owens led the way for Southwestern with 18 points on 6-13 shooting from the field, 6-7 from the free throw line. As a team SU was 41.2% from the floor and 33.3% from three point range, 93.3% from the charity stripe. Annie Bourne was the only other Pirate in double-digits with 12 points. St. Thomas' Sarah Smith led all scorers with 23.

Southwestern committed 20 turnovers and forced the Bobcats into 14 and were -11 in rebounding margin.

The loss drops the Pirates to 3-1 on the year. They open SCAC conference action on the road Friday night, facing Colorado College in Colorado Springs at 7pm CT.
