Pirates Take Home Opener to Remain Perfect

Pirates Take Home Opener to Remain Perfect

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern remained perfect with an 83-73 win in their first home contest on Tuesday evening, defeating Mary Hardin Baylor to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Mary Hardin Baylor opened the game with three straight layups, sparking the Pirates to amp up their defense by going into a press to stop the Crusaders in their tracks. The tactic change worked as SU forced UMHB into 14 first half turnovers while recording 6 steals to mount an 11 point lead, 38-27 heading into halftime. Anna Fareed was unstoppable in the opening frame, posting 19 points on 6-9 shooting from the field, 4-6 from three point range while going 3-3 from the free throw line.

After making the opening basket of the half Southwestern picked up where they left off defensively, forcing two turnovers in UMHB's first two possessions. The Crusaders pushed back with a basket in transition followed by a three pointer to pull within eight, 42-34 with 17 minutes on the clock.

The Crusaders closed the gap from the three point line, making three consecutive to pull within four, 53-49 with just under 11 minutes to play. UMHB tied the score 55-55 on a drive by Andre'a Davis with nine minutes to go.

Three lead changes and two ties brought the game to the final five minutes with Southwestern holding a slight three point lead, 66-63.  Solid defense forced the Cru deep into the shot clock, forcing them into tough shots. Chelsea Leeder's three was followed by three layups by Jordan Owens, Annie Bourne and Leeder and put the Pirates' lead back in the double-digits 77-65 with 2:18 to go.

UMHB was forced to foul to attempt to get back in the game but the lead was too large and SU held on for the 83-73 win despite poor free throw shooting down the stretch.

Southwestern shot 46.2% from the field and 47.1% from three point range while UHMB ended shooting 37% from the field and 30% from three point after shooting just 11.8% from long range in the first half. The Pirates won the rebounding battle 44-41 and forced the Crusaders into 28 turnovers with 12 steals.

Leeder and Fareed led all scorers with 23 points while Owens and Bourne both ended with double figures, 16 and 12 respectively. UMHB's Zamora led the Cru with 19 points while Jovana Miles posted a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Owens led SU with eight boards.

Southwestern takes their perfect record on the road once again, playing in the Trinity Classic in San Antonio on Saturday and Sunday. SU faces St. Thomas Saturday at 2pm to open the weekend.
